A new ethically sourced Kit Kat bar

Nestle, the Swiss food manufacturer behind vending machine favourite Kit Kat have recently introduced a new version of their standard biscuit treat but with a difference. The cocoa mass that they use to make the chocolate covering over the wafers has been sourced from beans grown by farmer families that are taking part in Nestle’s income accelerator programme.

Launched in 2022 the programme aims to address the disparity in incomes among cocoa-farming families and mitigate the risk of child labour. Participants in the initiative receive aid if they adopt sound environmentally sound agriculture practices and send their children to school rather than have them working in the farms.

In 2024 the program extended its reach into Ghana where it is improving the lives of women in the region as well as enhancing the environment with the planting of a wider range of high income crops and forests.
