Are you consuming too much artificial sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners are widely used as a substitute for sugar in various food and beverage products. These low calorie or zero calorie sweeteners have become a popular choice for people who wat to reduce their sugar intake, lose weight, or manage their blood sugar levels. However, while artificial sweeteners may seem like a healthy alternative to sugar, consuming too much of them can be dangerous to your health.

Artificial sweeteners, also known as non-nutritive sweeteners or high-intensity sweeteners, are synthetic compounds that are much sweeter than sugar. Some common types include aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and neotame. These sweeteners are added to a variety of foods and beverages, including soft drinks, candy, chewing gum and processed foods.

While artificial sweeteners are generally recognised as safe, research suggests that consuming high levels of these sweeteners can have negative health effects including an increased risk of obesity, digestive issues such as bloating and gas, an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, damage to oral health and also a small chance of suffering an allergic reaction that can develop into hives, itching and even difficulty breathing.

It’s important to note that consuming moderate amounts of artificial sweeteners is generally safe for most people. However, it’s important to be aware off the potential dangers associated with consuming high levels of sweeteners.
