Coffee and Heart Palpation’s
Have you ever had a heart palpation?
Worrying isn’t it?
Well according to new research conducted by the University of California in San Francisco, you need not immediately blame the palpation’s on the amount of tea or coffee you may have drunk. Regular caffeine consumption in fact, according to the research, may actually have cardiovascular benefits instead!
A group of 1,388 volunteers took part in the study, all of whom had underlying heart problems. 60 percent of these participants were specifically selected because they consumed caffeinated drinks on a daily basis.
The study lasted a year and saw those taking part being checked for heart irregularities. After twelve months the results were analysed and published showing for the first time that caffeine intake made little or no significant difference to the number or severity of heart irregularities such as premature ventricular or atrial contractions.
“In general, consuming caffeinated products every day is not associated with having increased … arrhythmia but cannot specify a particular amount per day,” lead researcher Dr. Gregory Marcus wrote in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
The results appear to go against conventional thinking on the subject with the researchers going further and stating that “habitual coffee drinkers” actually have less chance of developing coronary artery disease. Recommendations advising against the regular consumption of caffeinated products to prevent disturbances of the heart’s cardiac rhythm should be reconsidered, as we may unnecessarily be discouraging consumption of items like chocolate, coffee and tea that might actually have cardiovascular benefits,” according to Marcus.
The study was funded by the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Joseph Drown Foundation, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and the National Institute on Aging.
