Salted Coffee anyone?

We’ve all probably tried salted caramel chocolates and they taste fantastic, but how about salt in your coffee?

Well the next time you sit down and enjoy your well earned coffee in addition to the usual extras of milk and sugar ask for a small pinch of salt too. Then see the reaction before explaining that scientists have done some research. Let me explain.

These experts, who have many years experience in how human taste buds work, have discovered that if you have a particularly bitter tasting coffee, and let’s face it who among us hasn’t, a pinch of salt in the coffee takes away that bitter edge. Furthermore, it can also make the coffee taste better too.

Now, we’re not suggesting that you should stockpile a supply of salt for every coffee you drink, but for those with that extra, probably unwanted kick, a pinch of salt could, according to these experts, salvaged and drunk.

So now for the science bit: The scientific journal Nature, discovered that sodium ions suppress bitterness and enhance flavour. But, don’t overdo it or it will be like drinking sea water flavoured with coffee.
