Seaweed in your coffee?
We all want to enjoy fabulous tasting coffee from single serve bags but worry about the plastic content of the bags and their impact on the environment. It is a classic case of trying to do our best but being scuppered at the very start. But now it has emerged that a solution could soon be on the horizon, and it can be found on most beaches around the world: seaweed.
A London based company called Notpla (Not Plastic) has created a new dissolvable packaging product that is made from everyday seaweed. What’s more the packaging is flavourless so nothing will detract from the taste of the coffee held within. As an added plus, however, the fibre and antioxidants contained in the seaweed remain improving the nutritional value of the coffee itself.
Currently single use serve bags around the world cause massive impact on the environment it is estimated that a single plastic bag can release as much as 11 billion micro-sized pieces of plastic and 3 billion nano-size particles into hot water.
While Notpla have focused their efforts on the development of single serve coffee bags their ambitions extend to replacing a wide variety of everyday products including laundry detergent pods.
