Tax on Hazelnut latte’s’?
If your favourite coffee is a flavoured one such as a hazelnut latte you could be in for a nasty surprise soon. Following sharply on the heels of the Government’s sugar tax on soft drinks with too much sugar content their attention has now fallen on so called ‘toffee coffee’s’ that use hazelnut and caramel syrup to sweeten the coffees. The Government believe they add unnecessary high levels of sugar.
Tam Fry, of The National Obesity Forum told The Sun newspaper recently: “Lacing coffee with so much sugar is ridiculous.”
This move, however, won’t just affect coffee drinkers as those people who enjoy a cooling milkshake will also see the cost of their favourite flavours increase by a sugar related tax. Milkshakes are made using a similar process to hazelnut and caramel lattes and will be taxed in a similar way.
