Three brands make up most of UK’s thrown away drinks cans and bottles
The UK Government has announced that of all the litter found on Britain’s streets more than a quarter comes from just three top brands: Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Heineken.
The three brands make up to 23 per cent of all litter. The drinks industry was the largest UK polluter in both 2020 and 2021 according to a study undertaken by 5,400 volunteer users of the Planet Patrol app and accounted for 85,326 pieces of litter collected during those years.
Planet Patrol is an app that always litter pickers to record any refuse they find – and this is the third year that Planet Patrol has released a report on the total amount off waste discovered and the three brands are behind most of the dumped items. The results have encouraged the app to demand that the UK Government set up an ‘all in’ deposit refuse scheme in which customers pay a small fee when buying drinks bottles and cans. The deposit is then returned when the empty containers are taken to a designated collection point.
