Why we put milk in tea
Did you think that we put milk in our tea to flavour it, then you’d be wrong? Well, now it might actually be true but originally putting cold milk into tea was necessary because of the very fine delicate nature of 17th and 18th century China cups that simply couldn’t withstand the heat of the boiled water poured onto the tea leaves. Adding milk to cool the liquid helped to stop the expensive teacups from cracking and having to be replaced.
It make even answer the question of whether to put milk in your cup first or after the tea with many British people still putting milk into the cup first, but now it is purely for the taste and not to protect the delicate teacups.
